VEREP is actively partnering with congregations across the Diocese of Virginia to explore faithful and practical ways to use their properties for mission and ministry.
These projects typically involve congregational discernment, property analysis, and studies we refer to as “dashboards” or “landscape analyses,” which help congregations understand their current property and envision future possibilities. We are also developing tools and outreach efforts that support this work across the diocese.
Current Congregational Projects
St. Margaret’s, Woodbridge
Facing the loss of a major tenant and excess space, St. Margaret’s is working with a discernment coach to clarify its future vision. VEREP is conducting an analysis of three diocesan-owned properties in Woodbridge to guide next steps.
St. Mary’s, Colonial Beach
St. Mary’s completed a capital needs assessment and formed a committee to oversee property improvements. With construction estimates in hand and a $350,000 budget, they plan to renovate their facilities, launch a capital campaign, and sell two vacant parcels to support funding.
St. Martin de Porres, Alexandria
VEREP is preparing a dashboard study for St. Martin de Porres’ two properties, which include underused worship space and empty classrooms. A leasing feasibility study and childcare consultation are underway.
Church of the Incarnation, Mineral
VEREP is assisting Incarnation with the Estes House, a vacant single-family home on the property, which has deteriorated over time and requires a plan for future use or restoration.
St. Dunstan’s, McLean
St. Dunstan’s is conducting a capital needs assessment and working with VEREP’s childcare consultant. They are also connecting with a broker who specializes in leasing church properties for childcare programs.
St. Andrew’s, Newport News
Through a memorandum of understanding with VEREP, St. Andrew’s is entering a discernment process and dashboard study. Their property includes a vacant school building with potential for mission-driven use.
Hickory Neck, Toano
Hickory Neck’s “Dream Team” is exploring new opportunities for their 12-acre campus. They have partnered with VEREP for both discernment coaching and a dashboard study to evaluate future possibilities.
St. John’s, Portsmouth
St. John’s contacted VEREP for guidance on using their historic church for event rentals. Discussions include creating a template study and hosting a workshop on best practices in event leasing.
Other VEREP Initiatives
GIS Database Project
VEREP is developing a comprehensive database that integrates diocesan property records with Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping and census data. This tool will provide detailed congregational and regional reports to support mission-focused real estate decisions.
Outreach and Education
With support from Virginia Housing, VEREP is expanding outreach efforts through this website, printed materials, and conferences to connect more congregations with resources and guidance.
