A brand-new resource is now available to help churches and faith-based organizations take their first steps toward affordable housing development.
The Toolkit for Faith-Based Organizations, created by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) with support from HUD, offers clear, practical guidance for congregations discerning how their land and buildings might serve their communities in new ways.
The toolkit is designed for clergy, vestry members, and lay leaders who are asking: Could our property be used for affordable housing? Where do we start?
Inside, you’ll find:
Step-by-step guidance for evaluating property potential
Financial and partnership considerations to build a sustainable project
Case studies from churches nationwide who have taken this journey
Tools for discernment to help congregations connect mission with action
This toolkit is a significant addition to the growing field of faith-based affordable housing, and it aligns closely with VEREP’s mission to walk alongside congregations as they discern creative, sustainable uses for their property.
This toolkit was originally created by LISC with support by HUB and posted on January 22, 2025: View Press Release
We encourage clergy and lay leaders in the Diocese of Virginia to view this new resource or any of our other online resources, and then connect with VEREP’s Advisor Network for personalized discernment support.
